Insomnia

I've reached the breaking point.

I'm wide awake at 3:52 am and I did everything I'm supposed to, but still can't sleep.

If I take a sleeping pill now, I'll sleep all day, not such a good plan. But if I stay awake, I'll be useless at the volunteer event I'm at all day.

Anyone think this will mess up my cycle this month even more? Yeah, I thought so....

  1. You know what your significant other would say? Well guys usually think their cure is the best for insomonia...works for them anyways! lol....I do hope you got a few winks in Aurelia. I'd let you sit in on my interviews today if I could. That might put you to sleep!

BTW: What is the event you are volunteering for?

  2. My kids have an all day track & field meet and I guess I'm serving pizza and timing races and stuff.

And yes, that would be a good cure, hehe, unfortunately I can't wake him up at that point!

  5. Aurelia - I just stumbled upon your blog through another one and am really enjoying reading through it. I have insomnia at times...like every two weeks I don't sleep for two weeks. I am going on week three of not sleeping though and month 5 of working too much. I feel like I try everything under the sun to sleep (short of drugging myself). The only thing that works for me really is meditating. Try to get your hands on this CD called Sleep 101 - they have it at Four Seasons hotels. It knocks me out. And check out my blog - it might bore you to sleep!

  7. Insomnia is the worst, and it is even more insidious when it strikes at 3 or 4 in the morning. Because you are so close to morning it seems like you should almost just get up, but still so far that you know you really should get some more sleep. I also find that when I do fall back asleep, I sleep so hard that I can hardly wake up then at a normal time.

So, given how knowledgeable you are about all your other medical stuff, I'm sure you already know all the things you *should* be doing to promote sleep. Are you doing them?

  9. Oh yuck Aurelia. I noticed you'd commented on my blog at 2am. I hope you got to sleep. I had hellish insomnia a few weeks back, and cured it by turning off my phone, my television, and any work about 2 hours before going to bed, to have time to wind down. Not sure if you can do that in a hectic household, or what you've already tried, but I hope it doesn't last too long. LeRoy's suggestion is nice too.

  10. I went to sleep for a few hours and had to wake up at 6:30 am for our usual morning routine, and after some coffee I was okay, until now...I'm yawning.

I have sleep problems all the time, and end up using sleeping pills for a few days to break the cycle. I've always been a night owl, but sometimes it gets worse.

As for my cycle...the problem is that if my circadian rhythm gets messed up (sleep-wake) my hormones get messed up. Most women it wouldn't be an issue, but I'm teetering on totally infertile, so a wrong look throws me off!

I should write about that time I went to a sleep clinic though...hmmm maybe after I get some rest.

  11. Sorry to hear about the insomnia thing. I've got the night owl thing going too, but I don't have any problems sleeping. It must be super annoying! Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight.

  12. Insomnia makes me crazy.

No, really... it aggrivates my anxiety and depression.

So not fun. I sympathize with you Aurelia.

My wife has bouts of insomnia too. USually she falls asleep but then wakes up in an hour or so and can't get back to sleep. I got her some melatonin because Tylonol PM worked but left her groggy. Melatonin works most of the time. She doesn't take every night or it's less effective. Give it a try - its natural. Here's what we used: http://www.vitabase.com/supplements/antioxidants/melatonin.aspx
